Creating Sacred Space

When I say sacred space I'm referring to a dedicated space that honors the sacred. For me, the natural world is inextricably entwined with the sacred. How you conceive of the sacred, though, is yours alone to cultivate and express.

Generally speaking, an altar is a place of reverence that evokes feelings of calm, connection and receptivity. A safe haven. A portal to the Divine. A place to pray, reflect and heal.  A place to offer gratitude and devotion.

Your intention is powerful. Start small. Maybe a little table. Or a bench. Clean the surface. Declutter the surrounding space.

You could smudge the area with white sage to disperse negative energy and/or say a prayer to clear the space.

A votive candle is nice addition as a reminder of light and warmth, both within and without.

Here are some questions to help you select what to place on your altar:

What do you find precious about life?

What inspires you?

What brings you joy?

Who and what are you grateful for?

Are there certain enlightened beings that you share a connection with?

What creatures do you share a connection with?

Allow your altar to be an organic and responsive place. I often change who/what appears on my altar.  Stones, plants, candles, photos of my childhood dog, my parents and the blessed Mary are always present.  In spring and summer, fresh flowers and herbs make an appearance.  A found feather. Seashells. In the fall, colored leaves make their way to the altar.

Adornments of the altar are ever-changing to reflect nature’s impermanence. What remains constant, though, is the vibration and intention around the altar.  Making an altar is a creative and sacred endeavor. It is a ritual of its own accord. A declaration of your connection with life, the Divine, nature …

Blessings to you.
